May 26, 2024 – Winchester, Virginia – Memorial Day brought perfect racing weather and high drama to Old Town Winchester as the 2025 Collegiate Road Mile National Championships unfolded at the Loudoun Street Mile. The event, hosted in partnership with the Collegiate Running Association (CRA), marked the seventh consecutive year that the city has welcomed this prestigious championship, with the community once again turning out in force to support the athletes.

In a thrilling men’s race that wasn’t decided until the final stride, Gabriel Planty (Syracuse University) surged at the line to narrowly edge out Tony Tonkovich (Ohio University) and claim the 2025 Collegiate Men’s Road Mile National Title in a time of 4:04.8.

Tonkovich, who led from the start through nearly the end, clocked 4:04.9, just one-tenth of a second behind. Open athlete Jacob Hunter finished third overall in 4:07.3, with Tucker McGrath (Ursinus College) taking fourth overall in 4:12.1.

“I gave everything in that final stretch,” said Planty. “Tony made me work for it all the way and did the work from the start. I was happy to lean at the finish to edge him out for the win.”

The women’s race was equally electric as Caroline Timm (University of Virginia) closed with a powerful kick to overtake professional runner Susanna Sullivan (Brooks Running) in the final strides of the race. Timm captured both the Collegiate and Open Women’s Titles with a winning time of 4:41.3, just ahead of Sullivan’s 4:41.8.

Cleo Boyd, also a UVA student, finished third in 4:44.9, followed by Bethany Graham (Furman University) in 5:03.6, Caroline Donohoe (University of Richmond, 5:03.9), and Michaela Reinhart (University of Cincinnati Medical School).

“This event delivered two great races today,” said CRA Founder Steve Taylor. “Both came down to dramatic finishes, and the atmosphere in Winchester was incredible. Race Director Becky McGraw and her team did a fantastic job putting together a top-tier event.”

This year’s event awarded a total of $5,100 in prize money, distributed equally between men and women across collegiate and open divisions. Collegiate athletes were eligible to earn prize money in both categories, adding an extra layer of intensity and reward to the already competitive field.

The top three men and women in both the open and collegiate divisions received prize money, reinforcing the CRA’s mission to create competitive opportunities and financial support for student-athletes.

The final stretch of the Loudoun Street Mile winds through historic Old Town Winchester, where runners are greeted with the roar of spectators lining brick-paved sidewalks. The district’s centuries-old architecture, locally owned shops, and bustling cafes offered a one-of-a-kind backdrop as athletes battled to the finish line.

“Finishing through Old Town is electric,” said former race director, Mark Stickley. “The crowd gives you that final push you need when your legs are screaming. I really enjoyed running the race today, along with my son’s, Ryan and Garrett. For so many years I was just too busy to enjoy running it. It’s exciting to see it continue to grow with a record number of entries for today.”

Winchester, set in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, once again showed why it’s such a special place to race. The town’s mix of historic charm, local pride, and enthusiastic support made the experience unforgettable for both athletes and spectators alike.

The CRA continues its partnership with JAMBAR, the official energy bar of the organization. Founded by Jennifer Maxwell, co-creator of PowerBar, JAMBAR provides organic, protein-rich, naturally sweetened energy for athletes. Beyond nutrition, the brand donates 50% of its after-tax profits to active living and music programs.

“Our collaboration with JAMBAR reflects shared values in health, competition, and community,” said Taylor. “Jennifer’s vision is about more than nutrition—it's about making a positive impact.”
